elegant fruit hues {palette of the week}

The hues attributed to fruit photography often focus on juicy primary colours. Captured by Jojo Filer-Cooper, this beautiful photograph caught my eye because it is a unique showcase of the elegant colours and textures of fruit (all against an ocean turquoise backdrop). Not your average fruit bowl…

peyton and byrne identity

I was poking around the internet last night and became happily reacquainted with an identity from a few years ago that I really love. Designed by London studio Farrow, the look of British bakery Peyton and Byrne is minimalistic colour with a decidedly British flair. It is a cohesive programme of meticulous detail that can be applied to many products uniquely and manage to make a simple box of treats feel like a box of jewels. I love how the packaging is colourful (a great palette) but doesn’t overshadow the products. I wouldn’t mind a kitchen shelf full of those boxes…

luminous libations

Great styling by BHLDN for a feature on signature cocktail recipes. I love how different size vessels of luminous, sheer colour frame the featured drinks (while also highlighting the company’s glassware and bar accessory products). Colourful, well-styled cocktails? I’ll drink to that…

piles of spice {palette of the week}

Stunning autumnal hues with a dash of pink is how I would describe these gorgeous spices for sale in the Souks of Marrakech captured by British photographer Shoreham Boy. I am mesmerized by how full of life neutrals become when mixed with a couple vibrant hues. From Holi powder to piles of spice, exotic markets always seem to have the best colour palettes…

rolled ice cream posters

Fantastic posters for Kibon ice cream by designer Renata El Dib. Love the clever rolled edge hinting at ice cream cones. It’s amazing what a two-sided print and some iconic neapolitan colours can do…

rainbow radish & purple kale {palette of the week}

Every plate is a colour palette to me and this Rainbow Radish And Purple Kale Salad by Sneh at Cook Republic is no exception. What a beautiful mix of hot pink, chartreuse, black-purple and white. I’m not a radish fan but now that I know rainbow radishes exist, I may just change my mind…

amelia rope chocolate packaging

I have a thing for coloured metallics lately so this packaging for Amelia Rope Chocolate caught my eye. I love the simple but fun mix of vibrant metallics and kraft paper. Oh and how about Amelia’s Chocolate Cube Collections? A bit like a box of colour swatches, these little shiny cubes are too handsome to eat…

styled culinary stacks

I love the colour-focused styling of these culinary stacks by Dutch design duo Raw Color. The still life photographs were created for the opening of Martin Creed’s revamp of the iconic Sketch restaurant in London and feature disassembled ingredients of dishes from the new menu. As culinary creations are really layers of flavour and stacks of colour and texture, the styling is both smart and beautiful. Perhaps we could do away with word-focused menus and just use striking photograph to select our meals…

dusty pastels & juicy brights {palette of the week}

How on earth did it become Friday so fast? I have clearly slacked off on creating my palette of the week. A selection of colours that grabbed my attention yesterday are in this still life shot by fantastically talented photographer Johnny Miller. From dusty lavender to vibrant cherry red, the colours work seamlessly together. I love how the hues highlight that summer items can have a richer, more autumnal palette outside of the expected colour combinations.

pantone tarts by griottes

There are a couple of blogs that I truly wish I could live in. At the very top of the list is Griottes, a French style and food blog created by Emilie Griottes that is so gorgeous that I feel slightly giddy when a new post is up. The handmade whimsical aesthetic, sublime colour palettes and beautiful culinary treats… Oy. When I spotted these Pantone Tarts on Griottes this morning, I fell even more in love with the blog. Simple and stunning with pitch perfect styling, these pastries are an imaginative take on the classic colour chips while showcasing the lovely hues of everyday foods. Is it crazy to hope Emilie creates a tart for every colour in the Pantone swatch book?

colour block cocktails

Martha Stewart and her talented team never cease to amaze me with their beautiful photography/styling and always innovative, tastemaking ideas. Spotting these colour block cocktails has made my Tuesday! The handsome libation is a giant ice cube of alternating layers of fruit nectar and Italian aperitif dropped into a glass of sparkling water. Delicious, colourful and stylish. Check out the recipes and different colour combos here.

farfelle bowtie {in black & white}

The Farfelle Bowtie by Japanese design studio Microworks might just be the perfect accessory for your next dinner out. Crafted out of shrunken acrylic and available in many bright colours, the clip-on bowtie is a stylish take on farfelle pasta (Italian for “butterfly”). Pasta and fashion together at last…

one year of colour

Today plenty of colour is a year old! I can’t believe it. Now, I had some rather royal wedding level plans for this day but have had a few recent obstacles throw a wrench in the party plans. Alas, a large and insanely colourful event will happen one day very soon. For now, we will have to stick to a mini-party of the above mini-cakes I made as an excuse to try baking colour theory meets obsessive sprinkle placing with a toothpick. Yes, this has become an entire cookbook in my mind. Or more impressively, the layered rainbow cake my sister Kristi made for the blog-a-versary (excuse the very quickly taken photos of both!)

I won’t ramble on as I did at Christmas but I just want to say thank you again. I can’t believe how many fabulous people I have met in the past year who enthusiastically visit, send (very kind) emails, tweet happily, share links and generally, are amazingly supportive of this little corner of colour. I am so excited for what the next year of colour will bring. There are new things in the works including a lot more unique content and special features (and re-vamping some sadly neglected ones). Thank you all so much. I always knew colour lovers were the best people out there! Oh and see you at that colour party, date to be announced.

cooking up a rainbow

YouTube Preview Image

It’s hard to go to a grocery store’s vegetable section or a farmer’s market and not be astounded by the vibrant hues of fruits and vegetables. This advert for Lurpak Butter directed by Dougal Wilson celebrates the glorious colours and patterns of vegetables. How exquisite is that purple cabbage pattern? I love the dramatic, cinematic feeling (aided by the voice of actor Rutger Hauer) and how the vegetables move in rapid rainbow sequence. The ad seeks to show that “healthy doesn’t have to taste humdrum” and I think that it more than achieves that goal. I don’t know about you but the ad makes me want to cook and eat a rather large heap of vegetables…

harmonious kitchens

You may have seen the fantastic imagery of Ikea’s cookbook Hembakat Är Bäst created by brilliant photographer Carl Kleiner and stylist Evelina Bratell last year. The way the ingredients were presented in such modern blocks of colour was just sublime. What a way to imagine the components of cooking. The talented duo is back with another a strong overhead series focused on Ikea’s kitchenware. It’s a unique way to represent products and showcases the clean, uncluttered lines of Ikea’s aesthetic. I don’t know about you but I can see some strange faces emerging in those piles of plates and utensils… (p.s. I posted a couple of the original Ikea ingredient shots because, well, they are beautiful. I hope that prints are sold one day as they would look awesome on a kitchen wall!)

gelatin typography

Colourful, handcrafted typography seems to be my obsession lately and these gelatin letters by m-inspira, a pair of designers from Valencia, Spain, showcase why it is such a fantastic facet of the design world. I’m thinking wiggly, jiggly and good design should go together more often…
