sequin street art

Glittering sequins displays in Iceland. I don’t think a string of words has ever made me so happy! Danish/Czech artist Theresa Himmer created these graffiti-like sequin installations in Reykjavik, Iceland. The pieces, inspired by a glacier, volcano and waterfall, add a layer of sparkling dimension to city walls while highlighting the interplay of nature and urban life. The movement of the sequins mimic the beauty of ice, lava and water while recalling “how landscapes respond to changes in wind and light”. Oh and did I mention they are insanely, jaw-droppingly gorgeous? My list of favourite pieces of art ever just got a new addition!

(p.s. for more photographs of beautiful Iceland, take a look at my previous post)

I am now dreaming of doing this in my home!

Amazing!! I think this type of sequin graffiti is the new up-and-coming art form. I saw a Maori artist – Reuben Paterson – do something similar in New Zealand. I think he calls them Glitter Paintings. Here’s the link to his portfolio – http://www.reubenpaterson.com/. Awesome stuff!

I can’t wait to see these installments in Reykjavik! Hopefully they will still be up in a month’s time! :)

Caz, that would make one beautiful home design! Maybe over a fireplace? Oh the options are endless! We need to go to the sequin store…

Catriana, thanks for the link! Reuben has some fabulous work. Theresa started making these pieces in 2006 so I would say she is a pioneer of the sequin/glitter street art world. I really hope it is an up-and-coming art form as there are endless possibilities. Please oh please take plenty of pictures if you see the pieces up in Reykjavik!

Is there a place in Vancouver that sells these large hexagonal sequins? If there is…we must go on a field trip!! Delightful!! Great idea Caz!

Hi Chloé, just discovered your blog when a friend sent me this gorgeous post and I love it! My whole artistic life is inspired by colour, and in grey Vancouver that’s not always the easiest thing to find. I agree with Catriana, Dressew will undoubtedly have all the sequins we need to make some building more festive. The Art Gallery? Rogers Arena? Or we can be totally BC and redo Stanley Park.
